The course explores human diversity through comparative, cross-cultural study of language, social identity (including gender, race, and ethnicity), families, religion, social organization, political structure, subsistence practices, and economics. Theories and methods used by cultural anthropologists to study culture are presented. 4. Course Objectives Describethe major approaches and researchmethodsinanthropology including the holistic perspective, ethnographic fieldwork, and cross-cultural comparisons. Examine the concept of culture as the key adaptive mechanism for human survival and an explanation for human social diversity. Differentiate between cultural and biological characteristics. Contrast cultural relativism and ethnocentrism and explain their relevance to understanding cultural diversity. Analyze sociocultural systems, such as subsistence, economics, social organization, political organization, language, and belief systems and provide examples of how these systems are integrated. Evaluate the effect of globalization and colonialism on diverse cultural groups. Apply anthropological methods and concepts to a critical examination of ones own culture.
