Catalog Description This is a twenty-four hour course, designed for all sworn and civilian law enforcement personnel to provide a forum for them to explore and address self-identified contemporary leadership and ethical issues. The purpose of this course is to build on basic and advanced leadership, management and ethical courses to enhance personal and professional growth in ethics and leadership. This course will concentrate on learner-identified issues pertinent to each learners experience and organization. The learners will work in small groups to create a prioritized list of leadership and ethical challenges and competencies facing their organizations and law enforcement in general. Learners will assess their leadership styles and competencies, and assist in determining the content for the course. The learners will research identified issues, and develop action plans to address those issues. Each learner and small group will be required to create action plans and present a portion of their plans to the larger learning group. This course is offered on a Pass/No Pass basis only. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Create a profile of an ethical peace officer and a blueprint to maintain high ethical standards throughout a law enforcement career. Create a personal action plan. Create profile of what the learners organization leadership model looks like and assess his/her place within his/her organization. Create profile of what an exemplary law enforcement leader would look like and compare his/herself to that profile. Facilitate group discussion to arrive at the best possible resolution/results of an ethical situation that was developed from work-related ethical/leadership dilemma. 5. Organizational leadership theories/models, organizational change. d. Dynamics of Ethics Quality, Code of Ethics, Six Pillars of Character, Five Cornerstones, Characteristics, Constraints. e. Creating and Assessing an Ethical Dilemma. 8. Method of Instruction a. Self-assessments and group discussions. b. Video case studies and presentations. c. Class exercises and activities. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Oral and written reports, presentations. Written assignments. Class and individual projects. Participation. The final evaluation is folded into the individual/group presentations.
