Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Arabic 120 or two years of high school Arabic or equivalent. Corequisite None Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description This second course will continue to develop oral skills based on practical everyday needs and written skills based on the formal communication on practical everyday needs. Students with three years of high school Arabic should enroll in Arabic 220. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Use and understand modern standard Arabic well enough to manage increasingly varied everyday situations. b. Derive meaning from increasingly varied authentic material such as brochures, travel guides, short newspaper items, commercials, poems and songs. c. Communicate in writing with emerging creativity in the form of notes, paragraphs and letters to express personal opinions, ideas and reflection on the cultural content of the course. d. Compare and contrast professions, arts, music and films, entertainment and sports, and customs and traditions in different Arabic speaking countries with those of the learner in order to gain better understanding of the language, customs, attitudes and social mores. e. Demonstrate knowledge of common factors and differences between Arab countries. f. Pronounce and use Arabic with increasing intelligibility and demonstrate creativity using the structure and vocabulary of modern standard Arabic to express the students own ideas. 5. Listening and speaking tasks organized around thematic units on everyday topics to enable students to manage increasingly varied situations dealing with transportation, living arrangements, leisure activities, work, school, health and money matters. b. Common factors of and comparisons between Arab countries. c. Cultural differences between the Arabic speaking world and the students' own cultures in the areas of professions, arts, music and films, entertainment and sports, and customs and traditions in general. d. Grammar explanations to facilitate the acquisition and oral production of the language. e. Development of students' writing skills to enable them to produce in writing what they can communicate orally. f. Authentic reading material. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture and presentation of communicative activities and supporting target language structures. b. Discussion of cultural content. c. Multimedia presentations using the Internet and films. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Periodic written and oral evaluation of students' performance in listening and reading comprehension and speaking and writing. b. Periodic test to evaluate students' interim progress. c. Comprehensive midterm and final oral and written exam to evaluate students' performance. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Regular homework assignments. b. Preparation for oral presentations on topics such as the family, education in the Arab world, famous universities, food and drinks and the weather. 11. Texts a.
