Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Arabic 121 or three years of high school Arabic or the equivalent. Corequisite None Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Arabic 220 is the continuation of Arabic 121. The course will continue to develop oral, listening, reading, and writing in order to acquire proficiency in Arabic. Students with four years of high school Arabic should enroll in Arabic 221. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Measure increasing ability to narrate and describe in past, present, future conditional tenses subjunctive. b. Communicate in writing with greater creativity in the form of short essays on contemporary topics and reflections about our society. c. Produce cohesive sequence of sentences with increasing fluency. d. Read and comprehend authentic cultural materials such as newspaper articles and short essays. e. Compare and contrast daily routines and habits, and customs and traditions in Arabic speaking countries with those of the learner in order to gain better understanding of the language, customs, attitudes and social mores. f. Demonstrate knowledge about memorable events, important phases and political events of different Arab countries and knowledge about famous Arab-Americans. 5. Listening and speaking tasks organized around increasingly varied situations dealing with opinions, feelings, agreement and disagreement. b. Presentation and discussion of memorable events, important phases and political events of different Arab countries, and famous Arab-Americans. c. Discussion of Egyptian dialect cultural differences between the Arabic speaking world and the students' own cultures in the areas of daily routines and habits, and customs and traditions in general. d. Grammar explanations to facilitate the acquisition and oral production of the language. e. Development of students' writing skills to enable them to produce in writing what they can communicate orally. f. Authentic reading material as the basis for discussions and presentations. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture and presentation of communicative activities and supporting target language structures. b. Discussion of cultural content. c. Multimedia presentations using the Internet and films. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Periodic written and oral evaluation of students' performance in listening and reading comprehension and speaking and writing. b. Periodic achievement tests to evaluate students' interim progress. c.
