Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Arabic 220 or four years of high school Arabic or equivalent. Corequisite None Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Arabic 221 is the continuation of Arabic 220. The course will continue to develop oral, reading, writing and listening in order to improve proficiency in Arabic. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Show increasing ability to narrate and describe in all tenses. b. Communicate in writing with greater creativity in any genre, (short story, essay), on contemporary topics and reflections about our society. c. Sustain a conversation using the Egyptian dialect, with native speaker; discuss culture and everyday topics. d. Analyze materials such as short works of literature, short essays and newspaper articles. e. Compare and contrast the role of family and kinship, the traditions and customs of marriage, birth and death, the meanings, sources and symbols of holidays and festivals, and social hierarchies in different Arabic speaking countries with those of the learner in order to gain better understanding of the language, customs, attitudes and social mores. f. Listening and speaking tasks organized around increasingly varied and complex situations dealing with opinions, feelings, agreement and disagreement. b. Presentation and discussion of Arabic literature, famous Arab writers, and historical events. b. In-depth discussion of cultural differences between the Arabic speaking world and the students' own cultures in the areas of family and kinship, the traditions and customs of marriage, birth and death, the meanings, sources and symbols of holidays and festivals, social hierarchies, customs and culture in general. c. Presentation of grammar review to reinforce the acquisition and oral production of the language. d. Increased development of students' writing skills to enable them to produce in writing what they can communicate orally. e. Presentation of authentic and more complex reading material as the basis for discussions and presentations. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture and presentation of communicative activities and supporting target language structures. b. Discussion of cultural content. c. Multimedia presentations using the Internet and films. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Periodic written and oral evaluation of students' performance in listening and reading comprehension and speaking and writing. b. Understand a variety of Arabic speakers in different situations and comprehend non-technical everyday spoken Egyptian dialects, in addition to others. They will participate in everyday Egyptian dialect, as well as Modern Standard Arabic, using appropriate idiomatic expressions and increasing extensive vocabulary. Identify and discuss differences and similarities between their own culture and that of other Arabic-speaking countries. They also will compare and contrast the Arabic culture and that of others students to acquire a better understanding of other cultures.
