Catalog Description This course is designed for students that have an interest in producing art in a public context and/or public art through a commissioning process. The course will cover several aspects and methods used in the production of public art works. Issues examined will include proposal, design, budget, procuring materials, safety concerns, methods, and installation. Students will implement artistic skills, techniques and concepts to design and produce murals or other works collaboratively for public context. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Examine and evaluate the practice, design and methods of public art Experiment in a variety of materials and learn a variety of techniques Design and propose a work for a commission Evaluate and negotiate the proposal with classmates Revise and organize a plan to accomplish the design Estimate a proposed budget Select and manage the procurement of materials and safety information Work collaboratively to create and install site-specific art work 5. Course Content Methods for planning, proposing, and producing art within a public context Issues with site-specific art, safety, installation, and maintenance of public art c. Process for public art project proposals, creating designs and budgets, and negotiating the final project d. Techniques and considerations for design and production of public artworks and the commissioning process e. Material options, problem-solving, and working collaboratively within a timeframe f. Creation of site-specific mural(s) through collaboration with involved community members g. History of mural painting in Western, Mexican, and African-American cultures 8. Method of Instruction Lecture Demonstration of painting techniques Group and individual instruction Field trips 9. Method of Evaluating Student Performance a. Hands-on methodology that demonstrates student proficiency with a variety of materials Project performance in relation to the proposal process for public works of art Participation in class activities and group discussions Ability to work safely in collaboration with other students, staff, and the public through entire process Demonstrated ability to participate in project organization, installation, cleanup, and safety practices 10. Outside Class Assignments Research current calls for public art proposals with the city, airport, Port of San Diego, or other entity Example: Urban Trees, Cow Parade, Little Saigon Art Walk, Murals of La Jolla. Prepare public art proposals and sketches relevant to current calls for art Example: Write artist statement, resume, project proposal, proposed budget, and create proposal sketches. Visit local public art sites (like Chicano Park or other) to write a report or paper Example: Write a five-page paper analyzing the history of Chicano Park and the relevance of that movement and the resulting murals in todays historical climate.
