Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Art 120 or Art 124 or equivalent. Corequisite None Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Introduction to principles, elements, and practices of painting. Emphasizes painting tools, materials, techniques and color theory as well as creative responses to subject matter. Students will develop skill in handling form, space, and plastic aspects of acrylic and/or oil paints as well as examine painting as a vehicle for social, political, and cultural expression. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Create logical and expressive paintings by applying the principles and elements of two-dimensional design. b. Analyze pictures of various epochs, cultures and personal styles. c. Create artwork utilizing various art media and techniques. d. Analyze painting concepts, methods and techniques and refine working methods to improve the finished painting. e. Apply the principles of perceptually and theoretically based color theory to painting projects. f. Construct and prepare painting surfaces and supports. g. Safely handle and employ studio painting materials and equipment. 5. Instructional Facilities Studio space with appropriate tables and easels, wall space, adequate lighting, sinks with traps, storage, audiovisual equipment, whiteboard and adequate ventilation. 6. Special Materials Required of Student Appropriate art media and equipment as selected by instructor, such as acrylic or oil paints, oil pastels, brushes, canvas, panel, etc. ART 121 PAINTING I page 2 7. Course Content a. Application of the art elements and principles of design in painting compositions. b. Exploration of the physical properties of painting materials. c. Technical skills such as mixing color, creating a palette and applying painting techniques. d. Evaluation and application of basic principles of color theory applied observationally and theoretically. e. Incorporation of expressive form and color theory in complex, logical and expressive compositions. f. Various appropriate art media, vocabulary, and historically based painting styles. g. Construction and preparation of painting surfaces and supports. Studio, equipment, and material use safety handling procedures and rules. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture and art historical overview b. Group discussion and activities c. Individualized instruction d. Laboratory demonstration e. Field trips as appropriate 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Group and individual critiques of artwork in oral and written formats looking at form and technique. b. Written assignments, which may include a report on a museum visit or a response to an article or other assigned readings. c. Quizzes and exams on painting vocabulary as well as a written final. d. Portfolio of completed artwork including value scales, color charts, still-life, landscape, self-portrait, Mapping Your Days (exploring time and identity), etc. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Written gallery report(s): Critical Exhibition Review - write a critical review of a painting exhibition including a description, interpretation and evaluation of the work(s) in the exhibition. c.
