Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours ART 128 Ceramics III 3 2 hours lecture 4 hours laboratory 96-108 total hours 2. Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Art 127 or equivalent. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description A course for those who wish to develop more advanced skills of clay technique and glaze formulation and increase their knowledge of ceramics as an art form. Historical and contemporary works will be emphasized. Health and safety concerns are stressed. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Focus on a more limited range of construction techniques. b. Examine ceramic materials and their uses in glaze formulation. c. Solve individual artistic problems based on stated conceptual criteria. d. Construct a plan, and execute art works based on identifying a personal style of working. e. Plan all kiln firings including preparation, loading, firing, record keeping, and post firing clean up for individual art works. f. Analyze professional art works in verbal and written narrative utilizing appropriate vocabulary g. Define health and safety procedures to protect self, group, and the environment. 5. Instructional Facilities Ceramics studio with glaze making area, glazing area, slip mixing equipment, clay preparation area, storage area for clay, glazes, dry materials and student works in progress, 20 throwing wheels (one per student per section), sinks and kilns in kiln room or separate facilities. Tables, whiteboard, lecture area, and slide showing area facilities. Computer for imaging techniques. 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. Clothing appropriate for the studio. b. The aesthetic direction of the course is determined on an individual basis as the student plans, and executes art works based on a specific approved direction with the purpose of beginning to establish a more in-depth study for the purpose of identifying an individual style. b. A minor focus will be artistic problem solving based on stated conceptual criteria. c. Examine ceramic materials and their uses in glaze formulation. d. Plan all kiln firings including preparation, loading, firing, record keeping, and post firing clean up for individual art works. e. Analyze professional art works in verbal and written narrative utilizing appropriate vocabulary. f. Define health and safety procedures to protect self, group, and the environment. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture. b. Critiques. c. Demonstrations. d. Slides and other visuals. e. Visiting professional artists' lectures and workshops. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Individual and group class critiques. b. Written gallery reports. c. Evaluation of all ceramic works, including final portfolio review, which will be analyzed and evaluated as to completion and comprehension of parameters, complexity and technical competence. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Library reading of ceramic periodicals, historical and technical references. b. Two written gallery reports.
