Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Art 121 or equivalent. Corequisite None Recommended Preparation None 3. Catalog Description Continuation of Painting I with emphasis on stylistic analysis and development of personal expression. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Identify, study, and create paintings in an historical style and from various cultures and groups. b. Create and critique paintings dealing with contemporary formal structures. c. Distinguish and explore subject matter of personal concern. d. Compose paintings utilizing contemporary techniques and materials. e. Develop and complete a body of work expressing personal style and voice. f. Write an artists statement about their work. 5. Instructional Facilities Art studio with drawing tables, drawing horses, and easels. Wall space for hanging and critiquing artwork. Adequate lighting including overhead lights, natural lights, and adjustable lamps. Sinks with hot and cold water as well as traps. Storage space. Drawing and painting racks to store works in progress. Audio-visual equipment: digital video projector, computer, slide projector, screen. White board. Ventilation. 6. Special Materials Required of Student Appropriate art media and equipment as selected by instructor, such as oil or acrylic paints. 7. Course Content a. Painting techniques. b. Nontraditional styles, materials, genres, and concepts. c. Projects explored concerning identity and personal expression. d. Exposure to diverse artists of historical and cultural relevance. e. Health and safety concerning specialized painting materials and tools. 8. Method of Instruction Lecture Demonstration and laboratory Group discussion Individualized instruction Field trips as appropriate Formative assessment of work in progress: identify strengths and weaknesses in developing painting. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Class critiques in which student projects will be analyzed and evaluated as to completion and comprehension of parameters, complexity, and technical competency. Self- reflection on project identifying strengths and weaknesses, as well as next steps. c. One written assignment per semester (museum report addressing subject, form, and content). d.
