Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours ART 226 Ceramics IV 3 2 hours lecture 4 hours laboratory 96-108 total hours 2. Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Art 128 or equivalent. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description A course for those who wish to develop a specific body of ceramic works with an emphasis on the aesthetic development of a personal style. The fundamentals of exhibiting and professionalism will be discussed as well as portfolio development. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Inventory individual ceramic knowledge and skills and work towards the resolution or continuation of an individual and personal style of working. b. Create a body of works within this style of working and maintain the direction for the duration of the semester. c. Set up construction techniques and glaze finishing appropriate and compatible with this work. d. Examine ceramic materials and glaze formulation that compliments the works created. e. Continue to plan all kiln firings including preparation, loading, firing, record keeping, and post firing clean up for individual art works. f. Analyze ones own art works in verbal and written narrative utilizing appropriate vocabulary. g. Define health and safety procedures to protect self, group, and the environment. h. Examine and distinguish various artists statements. i. Identify necessary elements for a professional portfolio. 5. Instructional Facilities Ceramic studio with glaze making area, glazing area, slip mixing equipment, clay preparation area, storage area for clay, glazes, dry materials, and student works in progress, 20 throwing wheels (one per student per section) sinks, and kilns in kiln room or separate facilities. Tables, blackboard, lecture area, and slide showing area facilities. Computer for imaging techniques. 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. Clothing appropriate for the studio. b. Various potter's tools. c. Water container, and additional tools and materials at the discretion of the student. d. Additional material deemed necessary by the individual problem. ART 226 - CERAMICS IV page 2 7. Course Content a. Identifying goals and assist in formalizing and focusing the student's ideas. b. Individual problem solving as evidenced in a series of finished works directed to individual goals. c. Specialized glaze formulation that compliments the works created. d. Self firing of individual art works. e. Study of health and safety procedures to protect self, group, and the environment. Creation of a specialized artists portfolio focusing on slide images, business tools, and resume. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture. b. Critiques. c. Demonstrations. d. Slides and other visuals. e. Visiting professional artists' lectures and workshops. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. On going dialogue of critique and discussion of student works in progress. b. Written artist statement. c. Completion of all assigned artwork categories including a specified minimum number of finished work. e. Evaluation of all ceramic works, including final portfolio review, which will be analyzed and evaluated as to completion and comprehension of parameters, complexity and technical competence. 10. Outside Assignments a. Library reading of ceramic periodicals, historical and technical references. b. Written artist statement about their body of work. 11. Texts a.
