Catalog Description A course for those who wish to focus on creating a cohesive and individual body of hand built or thrown ceramic works with the goal of presenting it as an exhibition or portfolio for advanced education or exhibition purposes. This would include photographing of the work for archival purposes and creating an artist statement and resume. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Analyze the conceptual basis for ceramic sculpture and critique the various styles of historical and contemporary works. Investigate and distinguish the various advanced methods and techniques of building and coloring ceramic sculpture. Evaluate and compare students own work in relation to historical and contemporary ceramic sculpture through research and class dialog. Complete a series of ceramic works that could be distinguished as a body of work emphasizing a personal style or vision with a goal of presenting the work for an exhibition or academic review. Examine the communication skills that are necessary to explain ones personal vision in a written manner, verbally and visually. Define health and safety concerns in relationship to setting up their own studio as well as working within an academic setting. Demonstrate the concepts necessary to take good quality slides of their artwork. Critique and evaluate various styles of resumes for the ceramic artist. Distinguish and evaluate the differences in becoming a studio artist vs. perusing academia. Calculate the various costs for developing a working studio. Analyze the issues facing an artist who is trying to exhibit in galleries. Differentiate the various exhibition venues for the ceramic artist. Health and safety issues in relating to setting up ones own studio, the academic setting, and the environment. What constitutes effective slides of artwork for presentation. Making a living selling ceramic artwork. Writing an artist statement and resume. Pursuing ceramic art as a career. Presenting oneself and portfolio to galleries and other exhibition venues. Health and safety in the ceramics studio. Teaching ceramics as a career. Applying to art school and graduate school. Applying to publish in periodicals. Applying for membership in an artist guild. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Completion of photographic archive of all work, artist statement, and resume. Participation in class by attending discussions critiques lectures and demonstrations. Completion of notebook containing all records on works completed and results in testing and formulating glazes.
