Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours CD 106 Practicum: Beginning 1 3 hours laboratory Observation and Experience 48-54 total hours 2. Course Prerequisites A C grade of higher or Pass in CD 123 or CD 125 or equivalent. Corequisites None (Required Preparation) State of California requires up-to-date immunizations and a negative TB test before working in childcare centers. This will be required of CD 106 students 3. Catalog Description A laboratory experience at an approved placement site, this course includes observing and recording behavior of infant through preschool children and working directly with preschool children. This course is designed to reinforce and augment understanding of principles and techniques for observing, assessing, planning and working with young children through direct experience. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Observe respectful workplace relationships among children and adults. Apply appropriate classroom communication and management techniques while in the childcare center. Use a variety of techniques such as frequency counts, duration records, narrative descriptions, anecdotal records and diary analyses to observe the environment and record behaviors of children and master teachers. Prepare and demonstrate use of appropriate curriculum materials and activities with young children. Articulate and use professional behaviors including written and oral communication competence. Recognize and evaluate appropriate policies and procedures of a child development center. Analyze components of appropriate indoor-outdoor environments for young children including safety factors. 5. Demonstration by master teachers. c. Maintain and share with instructor a journal of reflections of weekly experiences in the childrens classroom. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Written and oral evaluation of student performance by student and instructor. b. Student project (planned activity to do with children) and written report based upon observations of children and knowledge of child development theory and practice. c. Written observations of students learning through weekly assignments. d. Comprehensive written final exam and oral final evaluation. 10. Outside Class Assignments a.
