Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description This course is an introduction to gestural communication or Baby Signs with normally developing infants and toddlers. Modified sign-language is taught as a means of communication with preverbal or newly verbal children. An emphasis is placed on incorporating gestures into daily routines, play, and song in infant care settings to foster reciprocal and responsive relationships. Strategies for teaching parents about Baby Signs and working with childrens individual needs are included. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Recognize and perform a minimum of 70% of the signs shown in class. Compare and contrast American Sign Language with Baby Signs. Analyze the research and benefits of gestural communication for children and adults. Create a plan for incorporating Baby Signs into a childcare environment. Produce strategies for parent education regarding Baby Signs. 5. Instructional Facilities Access to the internet. Standard classroom. 6. Strategies for incorporating Baby Signs into child care setting and educating parents about its uses. f. Expressive and receptive practice will be provided. 8. Method of Instruction Lecture. Group discussion. Individual exercises. Videos. Role play. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Multiple format examinations including multiple-choice, short answer, and essay.
