Catalog Description This course provides teachers and childcare provides with the tools to create an environment that supports childrens behavior. It addresses the development, social, and cultural understanding of the reasons for childrens behavior. Practical classroom strategies including indirect guidance, verbal guidance, positive interaction skills, modeling and problem solving will be explored. The importance of building positive relationships with the family is also included. This course is offered on a Pass/No Pass basis only. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Identify developmental, social, and cultural foundation for childrens behavior. Analyze the impact of a teachers preconception about childrens misbehaviors and the concepts of punishment vs discipline. Explore strategies to develop a supportive physical and emotional childcare environment. Analyze the effectiveness of the classroom environment in maximizing childrens positive behaviors, minimizing inappropriate behaviors or being the cause of childrens unacceptable behaviors. Examine teacher strategies to prevent inappropriate behaviors and support childrens development toward self-discipline.
