Catalog Description Children see the world from an entirely different perspective than adults, including how they cope with lifes adversities. This class will assist the caregiver (parent, teacher or child care provider) in first, identifying children who may be dealing with a crisis or change in their life that is impacting their wellness, and secondly, offering the adult the tools for helping the child learn to cope with a crisis or change. This course is offered on a Pass/No Pass basis only. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Identify the types of challenges children face in the day-to-day world. b. Explore their role in assisting children facing a crisis or change that affects their well-being. c. Identify behaviors that children may exhibit that demonstrate a problem. d. Develop a plan to provide assistance to children in need. e. Locate resources to assist children in coping with crisis and change. 5. Instructional Facilities Standard classroom with black or white board and audio-visual capabilities. 6. Special Materials Required of Student None. 7. Course Content This class will explore the issues that children may face in their daily lives, from the death of a pet or person to the dissolution or blending of their family. It will include issues that, to adults, cause minimal stress but for a child can be catastrophic, such as the birth of a sibling or moving. The class will address ways of recognizing children who are stressed and provide tools for assisting children in coping with the cause of their stress. Quizzes after each section will test for understanding of factual knowledge. b. In-class activities and homework will provide opportunity for students to demonstrate learning. c. Written final exam. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Locate community resources that can offer support either to a child in stress or to assist the caregiver in helping a child cope with stress. b.
