Corequisite None 3. Catalog Description An introductory course to the Chinese language and the culture of its speakers. This course facilitates the practical application of the language in everyday oral and written communication at the beginning novice level. Since the focus will be on basic communication skills, the class will be conducted in Mandarin Chinese as much as possible. While becoming familiar with the Chinese speaking world, students will learn structures that will enable them to function in Chinese in everyday contexts. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Demonstrate effective use of Mandarin Chinese in simple everyday situations. b. Derive meaning from authentic written materials including ads, menus, cartoons, songs and other informational texts. c. Communicate in writing in the form of brief notes, messages, postcards and letters. d. Compare and contrast general cultural aspects present in Chinese culture with those of the learner in order to gain better understanding of the language, customs, values, attitudes and social mores. e. Demonstrate basic knowledge of Chinese music, calligraphy, geography, history, art and institutions. f. Listening and speaking tasks organized around thematic units on simple everyday topics to convey greetings, make introductions, ask and answer questions appropriate to personal needs in an out of the classroom. b. Basic Chinese geography, history, music, art, calligraphy, institutions, customs, and culture in general. c. Cultural differences between the Chinese speaking world and the students own cultures. d. Grammar explanations to facilitate the acquisition and oral production of the language. e. Development of students writing skills to enable them to produce in writing what they can communicate orally. f. Authentic reading material. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture and presentation of communicative activities and supporting language structures. b. Discussion of cultural content. c. Multimedia presentations c. Asking and answering questions. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Periodic written and oral evaluation of students proficiency in listening and reading comprehension and speaking and writing. b. Periodic test to evaluate students interim progress. c. Comprehensive midterm and oral and written final exam to evaluate students performance. 10. Outside Class Assignments a.
