Catalog Description The course will continue to develop oral and written skills based on practical everyday needs. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Use and understand Mandarin Chinese well enough to manage increasingly varied everyday situations. b. Derive meaning from increasingly varied authentic material such as brochures, travel guides, short newspaper items, commercials, poems and songs. c. Communicate in writing with emerging creativity in the form of notes, paragraphs and letters to express personal opinions, ideas and reflection on the cultural content of the course. d. Compare and contrast cultural aspects present in Chinese culture and those of the learner in order to gain better understanding of the language, customs, values, attitudes and social mores and how best to interact in a Chinese social arena. e. Acquire and demonstrate a deeper understanding of Chinese history, geography, art, music, institutions and culture in general in order to understand the current language and culture and how they evolved. f. Pronounce and use Mandarin Chinese with increasing intelligibility and demonstrate creativity using the structure and vocabulary of modern Mandarin Chinese to express their own ideas. 5. Listening and speaking tasks organized around thematic units on everyday topics to enable students to manage increasingly varied situations dealing with transportation, living arrangements, leisure activities, work, school, health and money matters. b. Further elements of Chinese history, geography, art, music, institutions and culture in general. c. Cultural differences between the Chinese speaking world and the students own cultures. d. Grammar explanations to facilitate the acquisition and oral production of the language. e. Development of students writing skills to enable to them to produce in writing what they can communicate orally. f. Authentic reading material. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture and presentation of communicative activities and supporting target language structures. b. Lecture and discussion of cultural content. c. Asking and answering questions. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Periodic written and oral evaluation of students performance in listening and reading comprehension and speaking and writing. b. Periodic test to evaluate students interim progress. c. Comprehensive midterm and oral and written final exam to evaluate students performance. 10. Outside Class Assignments a.
