Basic patient interaction, routine patient care, diagnostic testing in a clinical setting, preliminary findings and the physicians final report will be introduced. The diagnostic proficiencies learned in the classroom and practiced during the first-year lab sessions with the invasive cardiology specialists will be applied to situations in the hospital setting. 4. Course Objectives Upon completion of the course, the student will demonstrate competence in the following areas: a. Recognize the clinical environment of the Cardiovascular student. b. Integrate the routine department functions in diagnostic testing. c. Begin instruction in and exposure to patient interaction, physician interaction, interaction with lab technologists, as well as other department team members d. Demonstrate effective use of the equipment and protocols of the lab and begin participating as directed by their preceptor(s). e. Perform basic calculations as part of the test results obtained when testing patients. f. Assist in constructing the reports the physicians require. g. Anticipate what additional equipment or testing may be required. 5. Instructional Facilities Cardiac Catheterization Lab and/or Peripheral Interventional Suite. 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. ڰAPP issued picture identification. b. Small calculator (not on phone). c. Radiological Dosimeter (Issued by Health Professions Lab Tech). CARDIOVASCULAR TECHNOLOGY 122 CLINICAL PRACTICUM I, INVASIVE CARDIOLOGY Page 2 7. Course Content: a. Introduction of the Cardiovascular Invasive student to the clinical environment where they are integrated into the routine department functions in diagnostic testing. b. Within the Cardiac Catheterization Lab setting the student will begin instruction in and exposure to patient interaction, physician interaction and interaction with lab technologists. c. Expectation of the student to familiarize themselves with the equipment and protocols of the lab and begin participating as directed by their preceptor(s). d. Learning the calculations and test results obtained when testing patients and what the expectations of the directing physicians are. e. Specific to each clinical site, the student will begin to assist constructing the reports the physicians require, and begin to anticipate what additional equipment or testing may be required. 8. Method of Instruction a. Supervised clinical experience by preceptors who are technologists specializing in Invasive Cardiology. b. The CVT Program instructors will provide oversight. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. The student will be scheduled for 96 hours of clinical experience in the summer session b. Weekly Clinical Log Sheet which includes times in and out, a description of the cases in which the student is involved, the percentage to which they were involved in each case, and the daily and weekly totals of hours. c. A final evaluation of the students performance will be written by the clinical proctor and assessed by the instructor of record. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Weekly clinical log sheets. b. Written case reports. 11. Texts a. Required texts: Kern, Morton. The Cardiac Catheterization Handbook. Philadelphia, PA: Elsevier Publishers, 5th Edition. 2011. b.
