Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours CVTE 261 Clinical Practicum III, 5 15 hours laboratory Adult Echocardiography 2. Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher in CVTE 231. Corequisite CVTE 251. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description This laboratory course provides a continuation of clinical practicum with emphasis on the acquisition and refinement of skills in the calibration and operation of medical instrumentation used in the Non-invasive Labs in local hospitals and clinics with which the CVT Program is affiliated. The performance of specified diagnostic tests, calculation of hemodynamic data, and professional performance in the clinical environment will be stressed. Emphasis will be on consolidating skills acquired in CVTE 231 into complete diagnostic studies, including qualitative diagnostic interpretations. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Set up, calibrate and operate electrocardiographs, exercise treadmills, pacemaker analyzers, Holter electrocardiographic monitors, and echocardiographs in accordance with manufacturers' specifications and criteria specified by the instructor. b. Execute standard electrocardiograms, ambulatory electrocardiograms, exercise stress tests, MMode, 2- D, continuous and pulse wave Doppler and color-flow Doppler, and exercise stress echocardiograms in accordance with criteria established by the American Society of Echocardiography and the instructor. c. Record, measure, and calculate specified cardiac function indices in accordance with criteria specified by the American Society of Echocardiography, the course text and the instructor. d. Formulate qualitative analysis of M-Mode and 2-D echocardiograms for anatomic continuity and segmental wall motion in accordance with criteria established by the course text and the instructor. e. Demonstrate proficiency in M-Mode, 2-Dimensional, Doppler, and color-flow echocardiography, exercise stress testing and 24-hour ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring in accordance with criteria established by the CVT Program Competencies, local laboratory policy and the instructor. 5. Instructional Facilities Echocardiography labs in local hospitals and clinics. CARDIOVASCULAR TECHNOLOGY 261 - CLINICAL PRACTICUM III, ADULT ECHOCARDIOGRAPHY Page 2 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. ڰAPP issued picture identification. b. Basic calculator (not on phone). c. Lab coat with student patch. d. Stethoscope (optional). e. EKG Calipers. 7. Course Content a. Each echocardiography student will spend an average of 15 hours per week in the clinical environment. b. Students will perform or assist in the performance of specified diagnostic tests for the detection of cardiovascular disease. c. Students participate fully in the day-to-day activities of the department to which they are assigned. d. This course provides the opportunity to use state-of-the-art instrumentation in the assessment of a typical patient population as seen in a modern cardiovascular diagnostic center. e. Students may be required to rotate through two or more clinical sites per semester in order to assure maximum exposure to a wide array of instrumentation and patient pathology. 8. Method of Instruction a. Supervised clinical experience by preceptors who are technologists specializing in Echocardiography. b. The CVT Program instructors will provide oversight. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. The student will be scheduled for 240 hours of clinical experience in the spring semester. b. Weekly Clinical Log Sheet which includes times in and out, a description of the cases in which the student is involved, the percentage to which they were involved in each case, and the daily and weekly totals of hours. c. A final evaluation of the students performance will be written by their clinical proctor and assessed by the instructor. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Weekly clinical log sheets. b. Written case reports. 11. Texts a. Required texts: Otto, Catherine. Textbook of Clinical Echocardiography. Philadelphia, PA: Elsevier Publisher, 5th Edition. 2013. b. Supplementary texts and workbooks: None. Addendum: Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, our students will be able to do the following: a. Develop and practice good patient interactive skill, helping to calm fears explaining procedures, and generally making the patients test a positive experience. b. Exhibit professional behaviors consistent with the local echocardiograph lab the student is assigned. c. Use and select sonography skills necessary for the entry-level cardiovascular technologist in an Adult Echocardiography Lab.
