Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in Dance 071A or Dance 081A or equivalent. Catalog Description An intermediate level technique course focusing on rhythm tap technique. This class is designed for the dancer with previous training who needs to work on specific skills before moving on to a higher level of tap dance. The class will include a center floor warm-up, as well as increasingly more complex loco-motor progressions, dance combinations, and improvisation. Dance videos will be shown periodically to illustrate the history, development and pioneers of rhythm tap dance. Students will learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. Students will be required to attend one live dance concert produced by the dance department and one department sponsored master class. Course Objectives The student will: Define and demonstrate beginning to intermediate level tap dance vocabulary through performance of movement material and written examinations. Develop the ability to articulate footwork with clarity, and duplicate increasingly complex rhythmic patterns. Differentiate and modify tap tonalities. Compose and notate a short tap dance routine. Evaluate and discuss concert dance in terms of style, performance, and composition through video and live performance. Develop the ability to perform rhythms in a round and/or work with others to create composite rhythms. Engage in increasingly complex improvisation exercises. Knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life style choices and evaluate their impact on an individuals health and well-being. Tap shoes (low heel, oxford-style lace-up shoes recommended). Course Content Tap dance as an art form, including discussions about the people, places, and events that have contributed, and continue to influence its evolution. Tap dance as a movement form, including discussions about movement vocabulary, technique, and style. Skills working in , single, double, and triple time. Skills with increased complexity in rhythmic structure and tempo. Toe taps, heel drops and toe drops, crawls, paddle and roll patterns, cramp rolls, brushes, shuffles, time steps, flaps, grab-offs, pull-backs, riff walks, and rhythmic patterns. Choreography and improvisational exercises. Method of Instruction Lecture. Application of dance vocabulary. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Skills testing in various steps and combinations. Written critique of live dance performance. Notation reading assignment. Final, consisting of performance of choreography and submission of notation. Outside Class Assignments Reading and drills from the required text. Attendance at and evaluation of a dance department sponsored master class.
