Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours DANC 072B Studio Workshop in 1 1 hour lecture: 18 hours Modern Dance II 1 hour laboratory: 18 hours 36 outside-of-class hours for lecture. 72 total hours 2. Course Prerequisites None. Corequisites None. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in Dance 072A or 080A or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description A low intermediate level technique course which builds on the theories and skills introduced in Dance 080A, or 072A. This class is designed for the dancer with previous beginning to low intermediate training who needs to work on specific skills before moving on to a higher level of modern dance. The class will include a center floor warm-up, movement progressions, and center floor patterns/combinations composed of qualities and movements introduced in the class. Dance videos will be shown periodically to illustrate a variety of movement styles and performance philosophies. Students will learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. Students will be required to attend one live dance concert produced by the dance department and one department sponsored master class. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Define and demonstrate beginning to low intermediate modern dance vocabulary through performance of movement material and written examinations. b. Execute beginning to low intermediate level movement combinations and exercises. c. Demonstrate the ability to create, and later evaluate, movement using improvisation. d. Evaluate and discuss concert dance in terms of style, performance, and composition through video and live performance. e. Knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life style choices and evaluate their impact on an individuals health and well-being. 5. Instructional Facilities Dance studio with mirrors. Occasional use of video camera, VCR, DVD, and video monitor. 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. Appropriate dance/fitness attire. Modern dance vocabulary, technique, style, and expression. c. Exercises, progressions and combinations which emphasize beginning to low intermediate level skills. d. Perform elementary skills including, but not limited to, basic leg extensions, tilts, spirals, ronde de jambs, triplets, contractions/releases, jumps, and hopping and raveling movement patterns 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture. b. Application of dance vocabulary. c. Demonstrations. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Movement midterm and final (videotaped and evaluated). b. Written critique of live dance performance. c. Written examination. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Attendance at a dance department sponsored master class. b. Students will demonstrate practical knowledge of modern dance vocabulary and technical proficiency appropriate to their skill level with a focus on correct alignment and movement mechanics. Students will be able demonstrate dynamic and rhythmic qualities specific to modern dance and to demonstrate musicality inherent in modern dance. Students will develop aesthetic values as they relate to dance and, based upon these values, will be able to critically think about, and analyze dance as an art form.
