Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours DANC 078B Studio Workshop 1 1 hour lecture In Ballet II 1 hour laboratory 2. Course Prerequisites None. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in Dance 078A or Dance 088A or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description A low intermediate technique course using a broad spectrum of ballet vocabulary. The class will begin with a warm-up to include center floor stretches, barre work, and alignment exercises. Locomotor patterns will include leaps, jumps, turns, and a variety of other ballet progressions. The class will culminate with center floor patterns composed of qualities and movements introduced during the barre work. Dance films/DVDs will be shown periodically to illustrate a variety of movement styles and performance philosophies. Attendance to one live dance concert produced by the dance department and participation in one department-sponsored master class may be required. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Develop intermediate ballet techniques focusing on flexibility, balance, strength, body alignment, movement qualities and rhythm perception. b. Execute movement combinations and exercises progressing to higher skill levels. c. Define and discuss intermediate ballet vocabulary, terminology and theories of ballet. d. Demonstrate practical knowledge of intermediate ballet vocabulary and technical proficiency appropriate to intermediate ballet. e. Demonstrate dynamic and rhythmic qualities specific to intermediate ballet and to demonstrate musicality inherent in ballet. 5. Instructional Facilities Dance studio with mirrors and ballet Barres. Occasional use of DVD camera, VCR and television monitor. 6. Special Materials Required of Student Student will be asked to purchase one ticket to a department-produced dance concert and to register in one master class. Plies, releve's and expanded barre exercises. d. Develops, grand battements, and adagio patterns. e. Loco motor patterns including double pirouettes, and chaine turns. f. Center floor combination. g. History and theoretical information regarding style and presentation. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture. b. Lab. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Movement midterm and final (videotaped and evaluated). b. Written dance review. c. Written vocabulary test. d. Participation in a master class as well as a written evaluation of the class. e. Consistent participation in classwork assignments. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Attendance at a ڰAPP dance concert. b. Participation in a ڰAPP master class. 11. Texts a.
