Catalog Description An intermediate to advanced technique class in tap which builds on the theories and principles introduced in Dance 081B and focuses on developing intermediate to advanced level skills related to tap dance. Dance sequences emphasize Broadway and/or rhythm tap technique. This course also covers the history, theories, and vocabulary of tap dance. Students will learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. Students will be required to attend one live dance concert produced by the dance department and one department sponsored master class. Course Objectives The student will: Discuss the history and methodology of tap dance. Analyze the similarities and differences of tap dance styles. Demonstrate intermediate to advanced level tap dance vocabulary proficiency through performance of movement material and written examinations, including tap turns. Demonstrate body alignment and mechanics needed to clearly perform intermediate to advance level tap dance material. Evaluate the movement and choreographic qualities of tap dance through video and live performance. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life-style choices and evaluate their impact on an individuals health and well being. DANCE 081C - TAP III Page 2 Course Content Lectures on the history of tap dance as an art form, including discussions about the people, places, and events that have contributed to, and continue to influence its evolution. Lectures on tap dance as a movement form, including discussions about intermediate/advanced level movement vocabulary, techniques, style, and interpretation. Progressive daily tap dance warm-ups, which focus on weight placement, syncopation, and complete articulation of the feet, knees, and hips. Intermediate to advanced movement combinations using techniques and vocabulary introduced in class. Method of Instruction Individual and group lecture. Application of dance vocabulary through movement demonstration. Video for presentation and/or evaluative purposes. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Consistent participation in class. Movement assignments and final. Written examinations focusing on vocabulary and theories of tap dance. Written critical analysis of a live dance performance.
