Catalog Description An advanced level technique course in tap which builds on the theories and principles introduced in Dance 081C and focuses on developing advanced level skills related to tap dance. Dance sequences emphasize Broadway and/or rhythm style tap technique. The course also covers the history, theories and vocabulary of tap dance. Students will learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. Students are required to attend one live dance concert produced by the dance department and one department master class. Course Objectives The student will: Discuss the history and methodology of tap dance. Analyze the differences between various tap styles. Demonstrate proficiency in advanced tap dance vocabulary including flash steps through performance of movement material. Demonstrate proficiency in overlapping and/or interlocking rhythmic patterns through performance of movement material. Demonstrate the ability to produce articulate footwork during technical drills in triple meter. Choreograph and notate a tap dance routine. Improvise using advanced level steps and rhythms. Evaluate the movement and choreographic qualities of tap dance through video and live performance. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life-style choices and evaluate their impact on an individuals health and well being. Instructional Facilities Access to the Internet. Dance studio with mirrors and hardwood or specialized dance flooring. Occasional use of video camera, VCR and video monitor. Course Content Lectures on the history and development of tap dance as an art form, including discussions about the people, places, and events that have contributed to, and continue to tap dance and continue to influence its evolution. Lectures on tap dance as a movement form, including discussions about movement vocabulary, techniques, style, expression and interpretation. Progressive daily tap dance warm-ups, focusing on weight placement, syncopation, and articulation of the feet, ankles, and hips. Exercises based on movement material presented in Dance 081C which increase in complexity and difficulty and focus on rhythmic structure. Advanced level movement combinations and progressions using flash steps and advanced technique and vocabulary introduced in class. Improvisation exercises, which may include improve circles and trading 8s. Method of Instruction Individual and group lecture. Application of dance vocabulary, theories, and techniques through movement demonstration. Video for presentation and/or evaluation purposes. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Consistent participation in class. Movement midterm and final. Written examinations focusing on vocabulary, rhythmic structure, dance notation, and theories of tap dance. Written critical analysis of a live dance performance.
