Catalog Description Latin American Dance II is an intermediate level survey course in a variety of established and emerging partnered dances of Latin American origin with an emphasis on Salsa dance. This course also addresses techniques, styles, rhythms, leading and following skills, movement patterns and history of other selected dances of Latin American origin. This course is designed for students who wish to explore dances from Latin cultures and partnered dance. Students will also learn the principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. Students will be required to attend one live dance concert produced by the dance department, and one department sponsored master class. Course Objectives The student will: a. List and define the historical roots and cultural significance of Salsa dance and other selected Latin American dance forms b. Demonstrate rhythmic accuracy and musicality for intermediate level footwork and variations in selected Latin American dance forms. c. Demonstrate proficiency in response to partner in the role of follower for Salsa dance through proper use of frame. d. Demonstrate proficiency in movement initiation in the role of leader for Salsa dance through proper use of frame. e. Demonstrate proficiency in leading or following in selected partnering forms by applying appropriate compression through proper use of frame. e. Analyze, define, and perform proper styling and posture for select Latin American dance forms, focusing on body alignment and movement quality, at an intermediate level. f. Demonstrate proficiency in Salsa improvisation including solo and partnered dance skills as both leader and follower. g. Compare and contrast Latin American partnered dance to concert dance through video, dance demonstration, and/or concert viewing h. Identify, analyze, and define appropriate music for selected Latin American social and Latin ballroom dance forms. i. Demonstrate knowledge of the principals of physical fitness, as well as healthy life-style choices, and evaluate their impact on individual health and well-being.
