Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in Dance 084A or equivalent. Catalog Description A beginning/intermediate level technique class, which builds on the theories and principles introduced in Dance 084A and focuses on developing intermediate level skills related to jazz dance. Discussions will cover the history, theories, and vocabulary of jazz dance. Students will learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. Students will be required to attend one live dance concert produced by the dance department, and one department sponsored master class. Course Objectives The student will: Discuss the history and methodology of jazz dance. Analyze the stylistic differences between various dance forms. Demonstrate knowledge of intermediate jazz dance vocabulary through performance of movement material and written examinations. Identify basic verbal cues as they apply to movement. Demonstrate an increased awareness of body alignment and mechanics. Evaluate the movement and choreographic qualities of jazz dance thorough video and live performance. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life-style choices and evaluate their impact on an individuals health and well-being. Instructional Facilities Dance studio with mirrors. Occasional use of video camera, DVD player, and video monitor. Special Materials Required of Student Appropriate dance wear and jazz shoes. DANCE 084B JAZZ II page 2 Course Content The history of jazz dance as an art form, including the people, places, and events that have contributed and continue to influence its evolution. Jazz dance as a movement form, including movement vocabulary, technique, style, and interpretation. Progressive daily jazz dance warm-ups, which focus on complete articulation of the head, torso, and limbs, and include stretches, isolations, and stylized movement. Locomotor patterns which increase in complexity and difficulty and are based on movement material presented in Dance 084A. Intermediate level movement combinations using techniques and vocabulary introduced in class. Aspects of physical fitness and healthy life-style choices as they pertain to dance and their implications to life-long health and well-being. Method of Instruction Lectures and presentations. Demonstrations and discussions. Application of dance vocabulary through movement demonstration and practice. DVD and film for presentations for historical lectures as well as evaluative purposes. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Consistent participation in class. Movement midterm and final. Written examinations focusing on vocabulary and theories of jazz dance. Written critical analysis of a live dance performance. Outside Class Assignments Attendance at a dance department sponsored master class.
