Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. Catalog Description A beginning level technique class, which focuses on basic skills pertaining to ballet. This course covers the history, theories and basic vocabulary of ballet. Students will learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. Students will be required to attend one live dance concert produced by the dance department and one department sponsored master class. Course Objectives The student will: Discuss the history and methodology of ballet. Analyze basic concepts of stylization as it relates to dance. Demonstrate knowledge of basic ballet vocabulary through performance of movement material and written examinations. Demonstrate an awareness of basic body alignment and mechanics. Evaluate the movement and choreographic qualities of ballet through video and live performance. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life-style choices and evaluate their impact on an individuals health and well-being. Instructional Facilities Dance studio with mirrors, piano, and ballet barres. Occasional use of video camera, VCR, DVD, and video monitor. Special Materials Required of Student Appropriate dance attire and ballet shoes. DANCE 088A BALLET I page 2 Course Content The history of ballet as an art form, including the people, places, and events that have contributed and continue to influence its evolution. Ballet as a movement form, including movement vocabulary, technique, style, expression, and interpretation. Progressive daily ballet barre warm ups which include plie, tendu, port a bras, developpe, grand battement, and stretching. Beginning level movement combinations using techniques and vocabulary introduced in class. Aspects of physical fitness and healthy life-style choices as they pertain to dance and their implications to life-long health and well-being. Method of Instruction Lecture and presentation. Demonstrations and discussions. Application of dance vocabulary through movement demonstration and practice. DVD and film presentations for historical lectures as well as evaluative purposes. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Consistent participation in class. Movement midterm and final. Written examinations focusing on vocabulary and theories of ballet. Written critical analysis of a live dance performance. Outside Class Assignments Attendance at a dance department sponsored master class.
