Course Number Course Title Semester Units Semester Hours DANCE 095 Musical Theater 1.5 1 hour lecture per week Dance 2 hours lab per week 48 hours of lecture and lab 2. Course Prerequisites None. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in Dance 084A or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description A course focusing on technique and performance in the musical theater genre. Students will be introduced to a variety of Broadway choreographic styles with emphasis placed on characterization and performance quality of each theatrical style. Students will be required to attend one ڰAPP produced dance concert, and/or musical theater production and one dance department sponsored master class. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Discuss the history and methodology of musical theater dance. Compare and contrast the styles of various Broadway choreographers. c. Demonstrate knowledge of vocabulary specific to musical theater dance and theater at large through the performance of movement material and written examinations. d. Identify and perform proper body alignment and mechanics. e. Evaluate the movement and choreographic qualities of musical theater dance through video and live performance. 5. Instructional Facilities Dance studio with mirrors and occasional use of video camera, VCR and television monitor to tape students for evaluation as well as for the viewing of musicals. 6. History of musical theater dance, including the origins and cultural backgrounds of each style presented. b. Musical theater dance as a movement form, including characterization, motivation of movement, gesture, text, and vocalization. c. Progressive daily warm ups which include exercises designed to strengthen the feet, arms, torso, and legs. d. Floor stretch with an emphasis on the hamstrings, lower back, feet, and hip socket. e. Basic loco-motor and center floor movement vocabulary associated with musical theater dance including chaine turns, chasse, triplet, grapevine, pas de bouree, kick ball-change, single piroquette, pencil turns, split leaps, single and double time step, grand battlements, attitude turn, and various jumps. f. Basic rhythmic patterns which focus on phrasing and musical accompaniment (3/4, 4/4, 6/8, etc.). 8. Method of Instruction a. Individual and group lecture. b. Application of dance vocabulary and style through movement demonstration. c. Video for presentation and/or evaluative purposes. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Practical movement mid-term and final (videotaped and evaluated). b. Written dance and theater review, where applicable. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Develop aesthetic values as they relate to dance composition and choreography and discuss and evaluate dance as an art form in terms of creativity and form.
