Course Prerequisites None. 3. Corequisite None. 4. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in Dance 088B or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description A technique class which focuses on developing the strength and flexibility required for pre-pointe and beginning pointe work. Though this course does cover beginning level pointe skills, students are expected to have previous experience and be able to execute intermediate level ballet skills. Also covered are the theories and vocabulary of ballet as they relate to pointe. Students will also learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. Students will be required to attend one live dance concert produced by the dance department, and one department sponsored master class. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Identify and discuss intermediate level ballet movement and terminology. Discuss and apply theories of proper body alignment for dance as related to pointe work and injury prevention. Develop proper foot alignment with an emphasis on strength and flexibility. Execute variations with attention placed on transition and completion of proper footwork. Practice movement visualization and fast memory recall. Evaluate the movement and choreographic qualities of ballet through video and live performance. Knowledge of the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. 5. Instructional Facilities Dance studio with mirrors occasional use of video camera, DVD and television monitor. 6. Special Materials Required of Student Pointe shoes will be required for students who are approved by the instructor. All others will work with therabands and ballet slippers. Ballet as an art form, including discussions about the people, places, and events that have contributed and continue to influence its evolution. b. Ballet pointe as a movement form, including discussions about movement vocabulary, technique, and interpretation. c. Daily ballet barre warm ups which focus on positions of the arms, feet, and body, and emphasize strength and flexibility. d. Center floor exercises which incorporate transitional footwork specific to pointe including lev, relev, sous-sus, pique arabesques, and pique attitude. e. Movement combinations using theories, techniques, and vocabulary introduced in class. 8. Method of Instruction a. Individual and group lecture. b. Application of dance vocabulary, theories, and techniques through movement demonstration. c. Video for presentation and/or evaluative purposes. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Consistent participation in class. b. Movement mid-term and final. c. Written examinations focusing on vocabulary and theories of ballet and pointe. d.
