Course Number Course Title Semester Units Hours DANC 123 Advanced Teaching 1.5 1 hour lecture: 16-18 hours Practicum - Dance 2 hours laboratory: 32-36 hours 32-36 outside-of-class hours for lecture 80-90 total hours 2. Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in Dance 122 or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description This course is designed for the intermediate to advanced dancer who wishes to develop an awareness of proper teaching techniques. The student would implement these techniques into lesson plans for the intermediate technique courses offered at ڰAPP. The student, under guidance of a department dance instructor, would analyze the instructor's lesson plans as well as develop their own lessons to be utilized in class. Emphasis is placed on the development of lessons to be implemented in elementary and secondary schools as well as the studio environment. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Define current and safe techniques to be included in a minimum of three progressive lesson plans. b. Identify the proper sequence of exercise to be included in a thorough warm-up. c. Demonstrate correct body alignment, technique, and variety of movement qualities within the given lesson plan. d. Evaluate lesson plans in terms of creativity, safety, effectiveness, and longevity. e. Develop a well thought-out warm-up, locomotor patterns, and center floor combination. f. Instruct an off-campus (grades 5-12) class with attention to student retention, ability, and comprehension of the given lesson. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Dance studio. b. Occasional use of video camera, DVD, and television monitor. 6. Special Materials Required of Student None. 7. Course Content a. Warm up, pre-stretch. b. Feet, arm, and basic body positions. c. Plie and releve's. d. Contractions, tilts, spirals, and other lines specific to modern, jazz, and ballet vocabulary. e. Developes and grand battements. f. Locomotor patterns including turns. History and theoretical information regarding style and presentation. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture. b. Application of dance vocabulary. c. Individual consultation with instructor in terms of lesson planning, and explanation of correct alignment and technique problems. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Regular participation in class. b. Movement mid-term and final (videotaped and evaluated). c. Development of three written lesson plans and observation of those lessons in a classroom setting (full class lessons, warm-up, progressions, centerfloor). 10. Outside Class Assignments a. The lessons will progress in length and application of a variety of technical and performance elements.
