Catalog Description This course focuses on choreographic and/or performance skills and techniques in preparation for professional applications. Intermediate and advanced level dance students work as choreographers and/or dancers, and rehearse and perform choreography in a variety of performance venues both on campus and in the community. Though most performances will be scheduled during class time, additional performances may be held during the evening and/or on weekends. Students also learn the rudiments of starting, and running a dance company. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. As a choreographer, develop an awareness of performance aesthetics and skills. b. As a dancer, demonstrate kinesthetic growth in the areas of strength, coordination, rhythm, flexibility, and endurance, in order to perform dance as conceived by the choreographer. c. Identify the various aspects of successful auditioning, including specific auditioning techniques, creating professional resumes, and headshots. d. Differentiate the various aspects of dance production and their significance to the choreographic process. e. Discuss elements of performance, choreography, production design, and observation. f. Apply knowledge of rehearsal management, performance preparation, grant writing, and related issues relevant to starting and running a dance company. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Choreography and/or performance preparation including rehearsal organization, time management, specific performance skills, and adapting to site specific dimensions/limitations. c. Interpersonal skills when relating to theater personnel, i.e. directors, stage managers, lighting designers, stage hands. d. Rehearsals and performances. e. Grant writing experience. f. Running a dance company. 8. Method of Instruction a. Individual and group lecture. b. Practical application of movement theories and/or concepts. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Consistent participation in class. b. Demonstration of communication/ writing skills. c. Ability to work cooperatively as a leader/integral member of a dance company. d.
