Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. Catalog Description Supervised participation as a performer in the student choreographed dance concert as determined through the audition process. This course is designed for the student who has been selected to perform in two student choreographed works. Students enrolling in this class are strongly advised to enroll in one or more technique classes for the purpose of learning and/or reinforcing theories, vocabulary, and techniques that are applicable to the choreographic and performing process. Course Objectives The student will: Actively engage in the choreographic process in all rehearsals and performances as set forth in the dance performance contract. Interpret choreographic material presented by the student choreographer including improvisational tasks as well as set movement vocabulary. Identify and differentiate between contrasting styles and genres of dance. Assist those responsible for costume design and construction, if applicable. Demonstrate professionalism in responding to directions provided by the concert directors related to technical and dress rehearsals (arriving on time, prepared, approach the work with a positive manner.) Evaluate and assess the interrelationship of choreography, set design, costume design, and lighting design presented in the public performances. Instructional Facilities Access to the Internet. Dance studio with audio equipment. Theater for final performances. Special Materials Required of Student Dance shoes, if needed (ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, hip-hop or athletic shoes). Student dancers responsibilities vs. student choreographers responsibilities. Discussion and practice of various approaches toward the creative process. Discussion and practice of issues related to style, interpretation, and performance as they relate to dance performance. Discussion and practice of issues related to theater terminology, professionalism, theater etiquette, and aspects of technical theater. This course explores the development of choreography and performance leading to a public dance concert and includes performances for the High School Outreach event as well as the general public. Method of Instruction Laboratory/rehearsing original choreography created by student choreographers. Audio-Visual Collaborative learning Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Regular participation in all rehearsals and performances as indicated in the concert contract. Final written paper evaluating the concert. Outside Class Assignments Memorization of choreography. Character analysis if applicable. Assisting with costumes, if applicable.
