Prerequisites None. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in Dance 080A, or Dance 84A, or Dance 88A, or equivalent. 3. Catalog Description This course introduces the art and practice of improvisational dance. It also focuses on movement generation through the study of time, space, shape, effort, and body. Students are guided through specific exercises which enable them to discover the joy of movement and to enter into a free environment in which one can explore the unique and creative language of physical expression. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Utilize relaxation exercises to gain an awareness of the physical body and its creative impulses. b. Participate and performing improvisational exercises which demand physical and mental acuity in relation to a variety of environmental factors, and other participants. c. Define, describe, and implement theoretical concepts of space, time, body, effort, and shape. d. Utilize a variety of materials including props, costumes, and given environmental settings/parameters in their improvisational exercises and performances. e. Create their own accompaniment using voice, percussion, instruments, and/or other devices in a variety of creative situations. f. Create and perform improvisational exercises for which they have set the parameters and/or directed the group, of partner. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Access to the internet. b. Mirrored dance studio. c. Occasional use of recording equipment, DVD player, and digital projector. 6. Special Materials Required of Student Appropriate dance wear. History of improvisational dance, including discussions about the people, places, and events that have contributed, and continue, to influence its development. b. Improvisational dance as a movement from, including discussions about its uses, as well as theories and philosophies related to improvisation. c. Progressive daily warm ups which focus on increasing sensitivity to movement, and facilitating movement through relaxation, and stress release. d. Group work which focuses on sensitivity to one or more partners, and learning to collaborate in group situations. 8. Method of Instruction a. Individual and group lecture. b. Practical application of movement theories and/or concepts as they relate to improvisational movement. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Consistent participation in class. b. Movement-based midterm and final. c. Improvisation journal responding to class assignments, and chronicling awareness, development, and growth. d. Reports/presentations such as oral or written report. e. Written critical analysis of a live dance concert sponsored by the dance department. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Attendance at a department produced dance concert for the purpose of critical analysis. b. Attendance at a dance department sponsored master class. c. Attendance and participation in monthly contact improvisation jams. d. Maintenance of a journal responding to class assignments, and chronicling awareness, development, and growth. e. Addendum: Student Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this course, our students will be able to do the following: Understand basic improvisational vocabulary, skills, compositional forms, performance techniques and a kinesthetic understanding, and demonstrate these skills, alone and with a partner and/or group. Critically think about the creative process and the role of improvisation in that process. Demonstrate the ability to use roving contact points, energy pathways, support and give weight to a partner. Identify and demonstrate collaborative skills to create original movement and public/site specific improvisational dance performances. Develop aesthetic values as they relate to dance and, based upon these values, will be able to think critically about and analyze dance as an art form.
