Catalog Description This course explores analysis of movement composition for the stage. The elements of space, time, shape, and energy will be examined. Movement improvisation using various forms of motivation will enhance the creative process. Various studies in more complex compositional forms and choreographic tasks for solo, duet, and small group will be presented. 4. Course Objectives listnum "WP List 1" \l 1 The student will: Demonstrate knowledge of intermediate level elements of movement-space, time, and energy, and employ this understanding in the creative process. Improvise original movement based on various forms of motivation. Identify and develop appropriate movement material for specific movement studies. Select an idea or movement motif for a final dance composition utilizing all of the choreographic components presented in class. Appraise artistic merit in terms of development of an idea, construction of original movement vocabulary and sophistication of creative thought. 5. Course Content listnum "WP List 1" \l 1 Exercises in improvisation involving time, space, shape, dynamics, rhythmic structure, and music analysis. Guided improvisation utilizing support, released energy, and implementation of props. Movement studies for solo, duet, trio, and small group. Application of the following principles to dance composition: Development of a movement vocabulary appropriate for musical theater, concert dance, commercial dance, and improvisational dance forms. Repetition and development of movement phrases in support of various compositional forms (round, fugue, variation on a theme, ABA, etc.). Task movement as motivation for new movement vocabulary. Partnering and support studies to develop new movement possibilities. Development of a movement thesis in terms of a beginning, middle, and end. 8. Method of Instruction listnum "WP List 1" \l 1 Lecture. Guided improvisation. Demonstration and practice. Readings. Viewing of films and DVDs, and live performance. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance listnum "WP List 1" \l 1 Performance of eight solo and small group studies. Participation in improvisation studies. Completion of journal based on all choreographic assignments. Written final based on lectures, readings, and choreographic assignments. Written and typed analytical reviews of two approved dance concerts or theatrical productions. 10. Outside Class Assignments Attend two professional or college level dance productions/concerts. Attend one ڰAPP sponsored master class and complete an evaluation form. Schedule additional rehearsal time for final project/dance if needed. Recognize the importance of improvisation as a choreographic tool, and will be able to incorporate movement improvisation into the creative process of choreography. Define and discuss beginning to intermediate level choreographic terms, compositional forms, and choreographic elements related to rhythmic structure, and spatial organization. Develop aesthetic values as they relate to dance composition and choreography and discuss and evaluate dance as an art form in terms of creativity and form.
