Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. Catalog Description Participation as an advanced dancer in the faculty choreographed dance concert. Students will be admitted into the course upon successful audition. This course is designed for the student who has had prior dance training in the college or studio environment. Dance 230 reflects the number of rehearsal and performance hours required for four choreographic works. This course includes the composition and performance of large ensembles. Students enrolling in this course are strongly advised to enroll in one or more technique/movement coursed for the purpose of learning and /or reinforcing theories, vocabulary, and techniques that are applicable to the choreographic process. Course Objectives The student will: Actively engage and demonstrate, as a dancer, in the choreographic process in all rehearsals and performances as set forth in the dance performance contract including but not limited to: mental preparation, physical preparation, retention of movement vocabulary, mindful participation in guided improvisation. Timeliness and consistency in weekly rehearsals. Identify and differentiate between contrasting styles and genres of dance performed within four works of choreography. Analyze and differentiate between contrasting styles and genres of dance. Assist those responsible for costume design and construction, if applicable. Demonstrate professionalism in responding to directions provide the concert directors related to technical and dress rehearsals ( assisting with company warm-ups, arriving on time, prepared, approaching the work with a positive manner.) Communicate with faculty choreographers and directors regarding choreographic intent, technical challenges and emotional content. Adhere to all deadlines provided by the concert directors. Address and prepare for the physical and mental demands necessary to successfully perform in four faculty choreographies. DANCE 230 - PERFORMANCE ENSEMBLE IV Page 2 Course Objectives (continued) Demonstrate an advanced level of theater and stage elements including: stage directions, stage pictures and formations, transitions from set and prop elements, spike marks, a variety of entrances both on stage and within a non-traditional performing space, working away from the mirror, entrances from the wings, flats, timing of entrances, cross overs, special light cues, main drape and curtain choreography, composition in non-traditional performing spaces, safety concerns for both traditional and non-traditional performing spaces, spotting lights, hitting spike marks, front and side light, technical clarity and accuracy. Performing with live music utilizing the chance method of choreography. Pre-production and post-production needs. Instructional Facilities a. Dance or fitness studio with mirrors and stereo system with CD/I-Pod player. b. Occasional use of video camera, VCR and video monitor or screen. c. Access to the internet. Special Materials Required of Student Appropriate fitness or dance attire Course Content Assist and demonstrate choreography (if applicable) during audition process as needed. Preparation for the stage: working away from the mirror, application of notes, understudies. Performance qualities Choreographic intent/contrasting energies and dynamics Movement motifs/phrases/retention of weekly choreography (dance captain position to assist in the clarity and accuracy of the movement.) Approach to rehearsal for large ensemble: choreographic intent, relationship of choreography to intent, movement motifs/phrases, movement motif manipulation, unison, canon, organized chaos, solo vs. group, duet vs. group, guided improvisation, tableaus, beginning, middle, and end. Interpret choreographic material presented by the faculty choreographer including improvisational tasks as well as set movement vocabulary. Assist those responsible for costume and set design, if applicable. Written evaluation of post-performance experience including the dynamics of performing in a large ensemble and including diverse populations, varying levels of technique, varying levels of experience, varying age groups. Model and demonstrate timely acquisition and retention of movement sequences in rehearsal and performance. Demonstrate and model an acute understanding of the processes involved in participating in an organized dance concert, including auditions, rehearsals, production deadlines, and performances, and outreach opportunities. Analyze and discuss dance performance through oral and written critiques to develop aesthetic values as they relate to dance education and performance. Compare and contrast the most current performance experience with the prior semester concert experience in terms of technique and performance skills.
