Catalog Description The last in a four-course sequence, English 064 focuses on correct written expression through the continued study of language skills coupled with basic essay development. This course is offered on a Pass/No Pass basis only. (Nondegree credit course) 4. Course Objectives The students will: a. Utilize varied sentences that reflect mastery of a wide range of patterns of coordination and subordination. b. Read selected model paragraphs and multi-paragraph compositions to recognize effective writing. c. Incorporate varied transitional devices within paragraphs and/or essays to achieve coherence. d. Improve skills for in-class writing. e. Use invention, drafting, revising, and editing to organize and develop cohesive paragraphs within a basic essay that is free of mechanical and spelling errors. f. Conduct basic research in response to a question in order to synthesize information and incorporate evidence in a multi-paragraph essay. g. Integrate outside source material according to current MLA standards (with a Works Cited page and in-text parenthetical citations) in multi-paragraph essay writing. h. Use invention, drafting, revising, and editing skills, to write at least one coherent, minimally documented multi-paragraph essay that has a thesis statement, effective body paragraph(s), and an appropriate concluding paragraph. 8.
