Catalog Description This course is designed as a developmental course for students who read and speak English and need to improve basic reading skills. Emphasis is placed on building vocabulary, improving comprehension, increasing reading speed, and applying basic study skills. This course is offered on a Pass/No Pass basis only. (Nondegree credit course) Course Objectives The student will: Demonstrate use of basic pronunciation rules, structural analysis, and vocabulary development skills (context clues and the dictionary) particular to English speakers. Identify the basic parts of narration (character, setting, initiating event, plot, and resolution) in short stories, biographies and autobiographies. Identify the stated and implied main ideas in assigned readings selections at individualized reading level and/or in texts commensurate in difficulty with English 090. Identify and analyze supporting details in assigned reading selections at individualized reading level and/or in texts commensurate in difficulty with English 090. Develop an ability to recognize simple implied and inferred meanings in assigned reading selections at individualized reading level and/or in texts commensurate in difficulty with English 090.
