Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in ES 017A or equivalent or specified skill competencies. 3. Catalog Description A continuation of ES 017A emphasizing the development of an intermediate level trail hiking. Students will complete more physically challenging hikes to achieve an intermediate level of fitness. Principles of physical fitness, conditioning, and other relevant health-related topics will also be covered. 5. Course Objectives The student will: Implement safe outdoor trail hiking skills and techniques at an intermediate level (physical wellness). Identify and demonstrate Leave No Trace outdoor ethics (social wellness; environmental wellness). Describe one environmental issue affecting the wilderness then evaluate and design specific actions that can be taken to address this problem (environmental wellness). Analyze and evaluate intermediate level exercise performance through on-going physiologic parameters: resting heart rate, exercise heart rate, weight change (physical wellness). Apply intermediate level fitness training principles to an outdoor environment (physical wellness). Principles of physical fitness conditioning and other relevant health-related topics will also be covered. Instructional Facilities Mission Trails Regional Park (accessed west of campus). Course Content a. Planning and preparing for hiking trails at an intermediate level. 1) Physical fitness for trail hiking: fitness training principles. 2) Clothing and materials. 3) Strategies for increased hiking pace, and more challenging terrain. 4) Strategies for serving at the back end of a group of hikers; strategies for safely leading other hikers. b. Trail safety and etiquette: (outdoor ethics). c. Intermediate level of Injury prevention, treatment and emergency response (i.e. wrap a sprained ankle, splinting, use of an epi-pen, snake bite treatment).
