Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in ES 021B or equivalent or specified skill competencies. 3. Catalog Description This course is a continuation of ES 021B providing physical activity and information to meet the needs of a population at risk for chronic disease or injury that potentially reduce the quality of life. Principles of physical fitness, conditioning, and other relevant health-related topics will be covered. Emphasis will be placed on the development of an advanced level of preventive lifestyle practices that research has shown to reduce the chances of developing and/or severity of heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, stroke and other chronic diseases. This will include highly complex equipment use, movement and balance exercises to achieve an increased level of fitness. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Discuss, evaluate and incorporate new applied research on physical training or rehabilitation programs necessary to optimize ones functional capacity over time while preventing and/or treating chronic disease. b. Discuss and analyze concepts of the integration of nutrition, exercise and the systems of the body that relate to good health and well-being. c. Create an advanced assessment profile which allows and examines progress on a continuum of optimal health. d. Identify and examine a wide variety of chronic health problems, including heart disease, muscle deterioration, osteoporosis, high blood pressure, arthritis, pulmonary diseases, type 2 diabetes, neurological disorders and decreased immunity; including the affects on quality of life and physiological benefits of physical exercise in dealing with them. e. Identify and discuss advanced fitness activities that one can participate in and demonstrate progress outside of a classroom setting. f. Circuit weight training room, including mats, physio-balls, various cardiovascular equipment, mirrors and video and audio systems. b. Track and other aerobic routes. c. Portable folding chairs. 6. Special Materials Required of Student a. Appropriate fitness attire full short-sleeved T-shirt. b. Appropriate walking/jogging shoes. c. Towel. 7. Course Content A structured lecture and laboratory format to include: a. Comparison and application of assessments for at-risk populations with individual profiles relative to advanced levels of endurance, strength, and flexibility. b. Monitoring of lifestyle choices in regard to nutrition, exercise, stress-related activities and outside events. c. Discussion of therapeutic modalities to assist functional progress and/or to aid recovery from injury (i.e., massage, ice, chiropractic, stretching, Yoga, Tai Chi, etc.). d. Presentation of guidelines for, components of, and progression of advanced exercise prescription for specific chronic disease prevention. e. Investigation of the beneficial changes that occur in function, fitness and health in response to regular structured exercise. f. Discussion and examination of nutrition, weight control and general wellness relative to chronic disease prevention and/or management. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture/discussion. b. Practical evaluation of physiological changes. d. Creation of individual advanced level assessment and fitness profiles. 10. Outside Class Assignments a.
