Catalog Description This course is designed to help students increase flexibility and balance as well as practice relaxation and stress reduction through beginning Hatha Yoga techniques. The course will focus on safe, effective stretching, balance, stability of supporting muscle groups and breathing techniques. Discussion regarding the history and traditions of Hatha Yoga as well as stress reduction will take place. Students will also learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long wellness. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Implement beginning Hatha Yoga techniques relative to safe and effective flexibility improvement. Practice to improve flexibility, balance, stability of muscle groups, and breathing techniques. Demonstrate knowledge of the history and traditions of Hatha Yoga. Evaluate and practice stress reduction techniques. Compare and select basic yoga exercises in order to prevent injuries. Analyze reasons a particular stretch may be contraindicated. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as health life-style choices and evaluate their impact on an individuals health and well-being. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Course Content A structured discussion/lab format to include: Lecture/discussion on basic body structure and composition including basic muscle action, body mechanics, balance, and flexibility. Floor and standing exercises to improve flexibility, balance, and strength at a beginning level. Pre- and Post-testing of flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. Basic movement and breathing techniques for relaxation and stress reduction. Individual and partner work to improve flexibility and range of motion. Lectures on contraindicated exercises relative to individual limitations and needs. Lectures on the history and traditions of Hatha yoga. Lectures/discussions on relevant topics including the principles of physical fitness, conditioning, nutrition, weight control, exercise safety, and other factors critical to a healthy lifestyle.
