Catalog Description A continuation of ES 028B emphasizing the development of an advanced level of flexibility and balance, as well as the practice of relaxation and stress reduction through Hatha Yoga techniques. The course will focus on safe, effective stretching, balance, stability of supporting muscle groups, and breathing techniques. Advanced poses and techniques will be introduced to increase flexibility, strength, balance, and deeper levels of stress reduction. Discussion of the history and traditions of Hatha Yoga will take place. Students will also learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. 4. Course Objectives The student will: Implement Hatha Yoga techniques relative to safe and effective movement patterns at the advanced level. Practice to improve flexibility, balance, strength, stability of muscle groups, and breathing techniques. Demonstrate knowledge of the history and traditions of Hatha yoga. Evaluate and practice stress reduction techniques at the advanced level. Compare and select advanced exercises in order to prevent injuries. Analyze reasons why a particular position may be contraindicated. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness and evaluate the impact of lifestyle choices upon an individuals health and well-being. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Course Content A structured discussion/lab format to include: a. Lecture/discussion on body structure and composition including muscle action, body mechanics, and flexibility. b. Advanced level floor and standing exercises to improve flexibility, balance, and strength. c. Pre- and Post-testing of flexibility, muscular strength, and muscular endurance. d. Advanced movement and breathing techniques for relaxation and stress reduction. e. Individual and partner work to improve flexibility and range of motion. f. Lectures on contraindicated exercises relative to individual limitations and needs. g. Lectures on the history and traditions of Hatha Yoga. h. Lecture/discussions on relevant topics including the principles of physical fitness, conditioning, nutrition, weight control, exercise safety, and other factors critical to a healthful lifestyle. i.
