Course Number Course Title Semester Units Hours ES 047 Lifeguard Training 2 2 hours lecture 1 hour laboratory 2. Course Prerequisites Successful completion of Exercise Science 043B or equivalent. Demonstrated ability to swim 500 yards continuously using these strokes in the following order: 200 yards of front crawl using rhythmic breathing and a stabilizing, propellant kick; 100 yards breaststroke; 200 yards of either front crawl or breaststroke (these 200 yards may be a mixture of front crawl and breaststroke). Swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive to a depth of 7 10 feet, retrieve a 10-ournd object, return to surface, and swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Instruction in lifeguarding and lifesaving techniques, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and basic first aid that will facilitate successful completion of the American National Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, Community First Aid and Safety Certificate, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer Certificate. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Demonstrate the skills necessary to pass the American Red Cross examinations for the Lifeguard Training Certificate, the Community First Aid and Safety Certificate, and the CPR for Professional Rescuer Certificate. b. Evaluate the common hazards associated with various types of aquatic facilities to eliminate or minimize the hazards. c. Demonstrate, practice and review the rescue skills essential for lifeguards. d. Identify a person in a distress or drowning situation and apply the appropriate rescue techniques. e. Identify a person in need of cardiopulmonary assistance and/or first aid and administer treatment appropriately. f.
