Catalog Description This course introduces the fundamental skills of beach volleyball, including passing, hitting, spiking (attaching), blocking, and serving, as well as beginning concepts of team strategies and tournament play. Topics specific to mens and womens beach volleyball will be presented and discussed. Students will also learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Demonstrate proficiency in beginning fundamental skills of beach volleyball. b. Serve a volleyball using two of the three most common methods. c. Demonstrate proper body posture and position in the game of volleyball. d. Execute a forearm pass to different areas of the court. e. Receive a serve and continue to have the ball in play. f. Execute an attack from different areas of the court. g. Demonstrate appropriate body position and ability in defending an attack. h. Identify and distinguish different strategies (offensive and defensive) in beach volleyball competition. i. Improve level of physical fitness through participation in the activity of beach volleyball. j. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life-style choices and evaluate their impact on an individuals health and well-being. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Course Content a. Fundamental beach volleyball skills. b. Basic offensive/defensive tactics and strategies used in beach volleyball. c. Terminology, rules, and scoring as sanctioned by the NCAA and AVP. d. Team dynamics. e. Tournament play. f. Parameters of physical fitness as well as healthy lifestyle choices and their implications to life-long health and well-being. 8. Method of Instruction Lecture on court and in classroom on topics specific to beach volleyball as well as physical fitness and life-long learning. Demonstration of beach volleyball. b. Individual, partner and group practice. c. Application of drills to enhance skill mastery. d. Multi-media analysis. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Observation of students fundamental beach volleyball performance in game and practice situations. Daily charts and records of student performance and skills. c. Skill performance exams including final skill performance. d. Outside assignments and additional outside activities. e. Written final exam on NCAA and AVP rules and offensive and defensive strategies. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Inclusion of at least one additional day of prescribed exercise to meet minimum frequency standards needed to gain fitness. b.
