Course Prerequisites None. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation A C grade or higher or Pass in ES 176B or equivalent or specified skill competencies. 3. Catalog Description A continuation of ES 176B emphasizing the development of intermediate skills of beach volleyball, including passing, hitting, spiking (attacking), kills and cut shots, cross-court blocking, and serving, as well as team strategies and tournament play. Topics specific to mens and womens beach volleyball will be presented and discussed. Students will also learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Demonstrate a proper volleyball serve using the floater and jump serve. b. Execute an advanced forearm pass to different areas of the court. c. Receive a serve and put the ball in attack. d. Execute the overhead pass (setting-backset) in setting up the attack at an advanced level. e. Demonstrate an attack from different areas of the court at an advanced level. f. Demonstrate appropriate body position and ability in defending an attack at an advanced level. g. Execute a proper technique of a cut shot. h. Illustrate an advanced knowledge of strategies, game rules, techniques, and history of beach volleyball. j. Illustrate an appreciation for cooperation, communication, and sportsmanship. k. Demonstrate the use of mental skills in beach volleyball. l. Improve level of physical fitness through participation in the activity of beach volleyball. m. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life-style choices and evaluate their impact on an individuals health and well-being. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Advanced level of offensive/defensive tactics and strategies used in beach volleyball. c. Terminology, rules, and scoring as sanctioned by the NCAA and AVP. d. Team dynamics. e. Tournament play. f. Parameters of physical fitness as well as healthy lifestyle choices and their implications to life-long health and well-being. 8. Method of Instruction Lectures on court and in classroom on topics specific to beach volleyball as well as physical fitness and life-long learning. Demonstration of beach volleyball. c. Individual, partner and group practice. d. Video analysis. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance Observation of students fundamental beach volleyball performance in game and practice situations. Daily charts and records of student performance and skills. c. Skill performance exams including final skill performance. d. Outside assignments and additional outside activities. e. Written final exam on NCAA and AVP rules and offensive and defensive strategies. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Inclusion of at least one additional day of prescribed exercise to meet minimum frequency standards needed to gain fitness. b.
