Catalog Description Basic principles of practical personal protection for women, with emphasis placed on awareness and prevention of situations that may leave a person vulnerable to crime, especially rape. Physical skill acquisition, mental training, and verbal responses will be taught and practiced so students may develop the confidence to stand up and defend themselves. Students will also learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Demonstrate mental and physical preparation needed to defend themselves. b. Improve, through practice, flexibility, endurance, balance and coordination. c. Analyze and critique defensive skills in response to mock-up threatening situations. d. Demonstrate common-sense measures to reduce the chance of becoming a crime victim. e. Discuss and analyze how to project an assertive, alert and confident demeanor. f. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life-style choices and evaluate their impact on an individual's health and well-being. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Lecture/discussion on the parameters of physical fitness as well as healthy lifestyle choices and their implications to life-long health and well-being. g. Body composition and weight management. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture/demonstration. b. Multi-media analysis and films. c. Individual, partner and group practice. d. Drills to enhance specific skill development. e. Lecture/discussion regarding topics specific to self-defense, as well as physical fitness and life-long health. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a.
