Catalog Description Instruction and practice in the basic fundamentals of the French foil including individual skills, bouting, terminology and beginning tactics. Topics specific to fencing will be presented and discussed. Students will also learn the fundamental principles of physical fitness and their impact on life-long health and wellness. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Demonstrate basic skill proficiency of the French foil b. Develop increased speed of movement, muscular control and balance. c. Analyze an opponent's strengths and weaknesses and respond with appropriate tactics and strategies. d. Increase level of physical fitness. e. Demonstrate knowledge of terminology, rules, scoring and etiquette. f. Demonstrate knowledge of the principles of physical fitness as well as healthy life-style choices and evaluate their impact on an individual's health and well-being. g. Demonstrate beginning skill in a bouting format. h. Develop beginning level physical fitness, balance, agility and speed as applicable to fencing. 5. Instructional Facilities a. Basic offensive/defensive tactics and strategies. c. Beginning-level terminology, rules, scoring and etiquette. d. History of fencing. e. Introduction to and practical application of beginning skills and tactics in a bouting format. f. Development of physical fitness, balance, agility and speed as applicable to beginning-level bouting. g. Lecture/discussion on the parameters of physical fitness as well as healthy lifestyle choices and their implications to life-long health and well-being. 8. Method of Instruction a. Lecture/demonstration. b. Video analysis and multi-media materials. c. Individual and partner practice. d. Use of drills to enhance individual skill acquisition. e. Lecture/discussion regarding physical fitness and life-long health. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Daily observation of skill acquisition. b. Practical skills testing. c.
