Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description Advanced techniques, fundamental skills and rules of baseball. Team competition play to increase students skills. Open to students of advanced skill and primarily designed for those planning to participate in the varsity program or to further one's education in baseball. Serves as the Non-Traditional Season (NTS) preparation course for the intercollegiate team. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Describe and employ the fundamentals of hitting, bunting, sacrificing, hit and run. b. Distinguish the different fundamentals of throwing from the outfield, infield and behind the plate. c. Explain and demonstrate the fundamentals of fielding, positioning of the body on ground balls, fly balls, and pop up moving laterally for the ball. d. Apply the fundamentals of sliding, fade away, hooks, stand up, and straight in. e. Analyze and justify the different team offensive and defensive plays. f. Analyze individual strengths and weaknesses of opposing players. g. Interpret and describe rules of the NCAA baseball rulebook. i. Develop the ability to analyze opponents offensive and defensive tactics and respond accordingly. 5. Instructional Facilities Access to the internet. Regulation NCAA baseball field. Course Content A structured discussion/lab format to include: a. Rules, terminology of the game and team defensive and offensive strategy. b. Fundamentals of baseball. c. Analytic approach to opponents offense and defense. 8. Method of Instruction Individual and group practice. Classroom and on-the-field lecture and demonstration. Video analysis. Non-Traditional Season (NTS). 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Observation of the students fundamental baseball performance in game and practice sessions. b. Keep daily charts, pitching velocity, running speed from home to first, number of hits per time at bats. c. Skill performance exam. d. Written exam on NCAA rules. e. Written exam on offensive and defensive strategies. f. Performance final exam. 10. Outside Class Assignments a. Scout a professional ball game. b.
