Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description An introductory course to the French language and the cultures of its speakers. This course is designed for students with very little or no knowledge of French. It facilitates the practical application of the language in everyday oral and written communication at the beginning level. Since the focus will be on basic communication skills, the class will be conducted in French as much as possible. Students will learn structures that will enable them to function in French in everyday contexts while becoming familiar with the French speaking world. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Use French well enough to be able to function in simple everyday situations. b. Derive meaning from authentic written materials including ads, menus, cartoons, songs and other informational texts. c. Communicate in writing in the form of brief notes, messages, postcards and letters. d. Compare and contrast French culture and their native cultures to gain better understanding of the language, customs, attitudes and institutions. e. Listening and speaking tasks organized around thematic units on simple everyday topics to convey greetings, make introductions, ask and answer questions appropriate to personal needs in and out of the classroom. b. Discussion of cultural differences between the French speaking world and the students' own cultures. c. Multimedia presentations using the Internet, films, videos, audio CDs and cassettes. 9. Methods of Evaluating Student Performance a. Periodic written and oral evaluation of students proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing. b. Periodic tests. c.
