Course Prerequisites A C grade or higher or Pass in French 220 or four years of high school French or equivalent. Corequisite None. Recommended Preparation None. 3. Catalog Description French 221 is the continuation of French 220. The course will continue to develop oral, listening, reading, and writing skills in order to improve proficiency in French. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Show increasing ability to narrate and describe in all tenses. b. Communicate in writing with greater creativity in any genre (short story, essay) on contemporary topics and reflections about society. c. Engage in and maintain a conversation with native speakers discussing culture and everyday topics. d. Comprehend authentic cultural materials such as newspaper articles, short essays, and short works of literature. e. Compare and contrast cultural aspects of the French and Francophone cultures and those of the learner in order to gain better understanding of the language, customs, values, attitudes, patterns of behavior and social mores. f. Explain the history, geography, art, music, institutions and culture in general of the French speaking countries in order to comprehend the current language and culture and how they have evolved. 5. Listening and speaking tasks organized around increasingly varied and complex situations dealing with opinions, feelings, agreement and disagreement. b. Presentation of grammar review to reinforce the acquisition and the oral production of the language. d. Periodic written and oral evaluation of students' proficiency in listening, reading, speaking and writing, including short essays. b. Periodic tests to evaluate students' interim progress. c.
