Catalog Description This course focuses on social, economic, physiological, and psychological factors which relate to the older adults as their roles in the family and society change. It includes investigation of everyday issues of the aged with emphasis on health, housing, personal economics, family roles, sexuality, spirituality, retirement and bereavement. 4. Course Objectives The student will: a. Compare and contrast the current theories on adult development and aging. b. Identify physical, emotional, social, and intellectual changes during its later stages of the life cycle. c. Examine common stereotypes of the elderly. d. Recognize and assess the impact of common life style changes of the elderly on both the individual and the family. e. Evaluate current social policies, programs, and services for older Americans. 5. Course Content The course will cover current theories describing the aging process as it relates to the older adult's everyday life. Health care, retirement, death of life partners, economic issues, housing, sexuality, changing family roles, social policies, services and programs available to the elderly will be discussed.
